Sois nombreux par le Verbe et fort par la Parole,
Actif comme la ruche et comme la cité ;
Imite tour à tour avec fécondité
La foule qui demeure et l’essaim qui s’envole.

Travaille, croîs, grandis ! que ta hauteur t’isole,
Et dresse dans le ciel sur le monde dompté
Ta rumeur obéie et ton bruit écouté ;
Vis. Entasse la pierre et creuse l’alvéole.

Ce soir, Rome debout chante dans ta pensée
Le chant d’or et d’airain de sa gloire passée,
Et la Louve dans l’ombre allaite les Jumeaux.

N’as-tu pas bu comme eux aux sources de la vie
Le désir d’être seul qui les rendit rivaux
Jusques au sang versé sur la terre rougie ?
