Si je vous dis, ce soir, en respirant ces roses
Qui ressemblent au sang que l’on répand pour lui :
L’Amour est là dans l’ombre et son pied nu se pose
Sur le rivage obscur du fleuve de la nuit.

Si je vous dis : l’Amour est ivre et taciturne
Et son geste ambigu nous trompe, car souvent
Il écrase une grappe au bord rougi de l’urne
Dont il verse la cendre aux corbeilles du vent.

Successif ouvrier de bonheur et de peine,
Il ourdit tour à tour sur le même fuseau
Les deux fils alternés de l’une et l’autre laine
Qu’il emmêle, débrouille et confond de nouveau.

Prenez garde, l’Amour est vain et n’est qu’une ombre,
Qu’il soit nu de lumière ou soit drapé de nuit,
Et redoutez sa vue étincelante ou sombre
Lorsque sur le chemin vous passez près de lui.

Fermez vos yeux prudents, si vous croyez l’entendre
Marcher sur l’herbe douce ou sur le sable amer,
Pour écouter en vous gronder et se répandre
Le bruit de la forêt et le bruit de la mer.
