Sépulcre de silence et tombeau de beauté,
La Tristesse conserve en cendres dans son urne
Les grappes de l’automne et les fruits de l’été,
Et c’est ce cher fardeau qui la rend taciturne,

Car sa mémoire encore y retrouve sa vie
Et l’heure disparue avec la saison morte
Et tout ce dont jadis, enivrée et fleurie,
Elle a senti l’odeur féconde, saine et forte ;

Et c’est pourquoi tu vas, en ta sombre jeunesse,
Portant en l’urne d’or les cendres de l’été
Et que je te salue, ô passante, Tristesse,
Sépulcre de silence et tombeau de beauté !
