Toute la Gloire avec le glaive et l’étrier,
Et la terre qui saigne et la mer qui écume,
Le feutre balayant le parquet de sa plume,
La Puissance et l’Amour, la rose et le laurier,

De ce songe royal et de ce bruit guerrier,
Soleil d’or qui s’efface ébloui dans la brume,
Il ne reste que l’œuvre anonyme et posthume
Du marteau d’un sculpteur dans le bloc du carrier ;

Et le marbre du buste arrogant et romain,
Sans yeux pour regarder et pour prendre sans mains,
Se dresse taciturne et solitaire, au haut

De l’escalier qui garde à ses marches tassées,
Dans le porphyre roux, la trace sans écho
Du pas sanglant encor des Victoires passées.
