Ce matin est si clair, si pur et si limpide
Que les cloches, qui l’ont à l’aurore éveillé
En sa douceur soyeuse et en sa fraîcheur vive,
Semblent tinter au ciel, où longtemps elle vibre,
Une gamme d’argent et de cristal mouillé.

Midi. Le fort soleil accable la ramure
Et verse ses rayons sur les choses et pleut
Sa lumière éclatante, impitoyable et dure ;
Et les cloches, dans l’air qui brûle leur murmure,
Semblent fondre les gouttes d’or de l’heure en feu.

Les cloches de ce soir ont des rumeurs de bronze
Comme si se heurtaient entre eux des fruits d’airain
Et, mûres maintenant pour la nuit et pour l’ombre,
Elles sonnent au fond d’un ciel d’où filtre et tombe
La cendre qui succède au crépuscule éteint.

Le jour renaîtra-t-il de la nuit taciturne ?
La vie est-elle morte avec lui sourdement ?
Vous entendrai-je encore, ô cloches, une à une,
Recommencer ― Espoir, Amour, Regret ― chacune
Votre bruit tour à tour d’or, de bronze et d’argent ?
