Avec des mains de haine et de colère, Amour !
J’ai rompu rudement à mon genou farouche
Le beau cep qui porta la grappe dont toujours
Le goût voluptueux se ravive à ma bouche ;

Et j’ai fait, tout ce jour, des treilles de ma vie
Brûler le sarment sec et la feuille séchée
Pour qu’il n’en reste au soir que la cendre et la suie
Qui demeurent après une vaine fumée.

Et c’est ainsi qu’avant que s’éteignît dans l’ombre
Ce feu dont les tisons ont mordu la nuit sombre,
O Passé, j’ai voulu que ta flamme suprême

Couronnât et rougît une dernière fois,
Comme d’un éclatant et pourpre diadème,
Le visage brûlant que je penchais sur toi.
