Si haut que ta racine ait poussé vers l’azur
Ta cime épanouie et vivante, sois sûr,
Cher arbre, que, malgré l’ombre que sur la mousse
Etend autour de toi ta feuillée ample et douce,
Et bien que les oiseaux y chantent et qu’en bas
Un chœur de dieux sylvains défendent de leurs bras
La Dryade pensive au creux de ton écorce,
O bel arbre, debout encore dans ta force,
Sois sûr et pense que le temps et les destins
Qui font les soir jaloux naître de nos matins
Ne t’épargneront pas, car toute vie est telle.
L’inévitable lierre et l’automne mortelle.
