One's Opinion

Michael Hellwig 1972 (Washington, DC)

One's Opinion

A journalist once said
"If you're around three
engaged in discussion
at least one should disagree"

For standing in a circle
Patting each others back's
Scared to rock the boat
There is no gain in that

An objective disagreement
That's where knowledge lies
Regardless of the ear
For no one's held that high

You may be outnumbered
But read between the lines
Honored to stand alone
Forever in their minds

One never knows the reasons
People cross our paths
The impact we might have
Don't dismiss it with a laugh!

Everyone's opinion
Is a diamond in the chain
Which never gets to shine
If anyone refrains

About this poem

This poem was written on the shores of Biscayne Bay, Miami. As I was staring out into the waters, contemplating my "disease-to-please"! I slowly realized that my true beauty was hidden in my ability to stand alone. Not too long afterwards the words trickled through my pen onto the paper. Which turned into a heartfelt poem I cherish. This is a position I constantly have to remind myself to go back to. As it's easy to get swept away by both continuously disagreeing or agreeing with others.

Michael Hellwig

I began writing poetry as a way to pass the time in English class. But I quickly learned that it was my personal therapy. And I held onto this skill-set from them on. I have self-published several poetry books. But I quickly realized there is not much of a market for poetry. Let alone the rhyme genre which I know and love. more…
