Aren't as they seem

She stares in silence, no words come out,
People think she's fine, but in reality, she's filled with doubt.
When her smile is fake no one seems to know,
Her eyes are full with heartache, "I'm okay," is the lie that seems to grow.
She'd rather keep her pain under wraps, a solitude, she's the only one who understands,
The pain she feels came from someone else's hand.
Trauma bond is something that stays in her head, his words still ring you're better off dead.
Even though she escaped his physical wrath, something she has still has a hard time coping with,
the mental pain is the worst, she still remembers the smell of alcohol on his breath.
Things aren't always as they seem, even with a brave face,
Some women and even men aren't always in the best mental space.
I remember being bashed in the head with angry hands that felt like hate,
While the aftermath, fingers bloody, bruised lips, eyes, and back, he said it was out of love, the trauma he ensured to create.
Although I have escaped the horrible part of his hands,
Things aren't always as they seem, because the mental anguish still stands.
I may be a survivor at his hands, but I still live with trauma, as it stands.
Things aren't always as they seem, even if I smile understand this heart hasn't fully healed, things aren't always as they seem.

About this poem

In honor of domestic violence awareness. I am a survivor, and because this is domestic violence awareness month I want to say we are not victims, we are SURVIVORS!
