Un village

Emile Verhaeren 1855 (Sint-Amands) – 1916 (Rouen)



Des murs crépis, de pauvres toits,
Un pont, un chemin de halage,
Et le moulin qui fait sa croix
De haut en bas, sur le village.

Les appentis et les maisons
S'échouent, ainsi que choses mortes.
Le filet dort : et les poissons
Sèchent, pendus au seuil des portes.

Un chien sursaute en longs abois ;
Des cris passent, lourds et funèbres ;
Le menuisier coupe son bois,
Presque à tâtons, dans les ténèbres.

Tous les métiers à bruit discord
Se sont lassés l'un après l'autre
Derrière un mur, marmonne encor
Un dernier bruit de patenôtres.

Une pauvresse aux longues mains,
Du bout de son bâton tâtonne
De seuil en seuil, par les chemins ;
Le soir se fait et c'est l'automne.

Et puis viendra l'hiver osseux,
Le maigre hiver expiatoire,
Où les gens sont plus malchanceux
Que les âmes en purgatoire.
