Sois-nous propice et consolante encor, lumière,
Pâle clarté d'hiver qui baignera nos fronts,
Quand, tous les deux, l'après-midi, nous nous rendrons
Respirer au jardin une tiédeur dernière.

Nous t'aimâmes, jadis, avec un tel orgueil,
Avec un tel amour bondissant de notre âme
Qu'une suprême et douce et bienveillante flamme
Nous est due à cette heure où nous attend le deuil.

Tu es celle que nul homme jamais oublie
Du jour que tu frappas ses bras victorieux
Et que le soir venu tu dormis en ses yeux
Avec ta splendeur morte et ta force abolie.

Et tu nous fus toujours la visible ferveur
Qui partout répandue et partout rayonnante
En des fièvres d'ardeur profonde et lancinante
Semblait vers l'infini partir de notre coeur.
