Soir religieux (VI)

L'averse a sabré l'air de ses lames de grêle,
Et voici que le ciel luit comme un parvis bleu,
Et que c'est l'heure où meurt à l'occident, le feu
Où l'argent de la nuit à l'or du jour se mêle.

A l'horizon, plus rien ne passe, si ce n'est
Une allée invaincue et géante de chênes,
Se prolongeant là-bas jusqu'aux fermes prochaines,
Le long des champs en friche et des coins de genêt.

Ces arbres vont - ainsi des moines mortuaires
Qui s'en iraient, le coeur assombri par les soirs,
Comme jadis partaient les longs pénitents noirs
Pèleriner au loin vers d'anciens sanctuaires.

Et la route montant et tout à coup s'ouvrant
Sur le couchant rougi comme un plant de pivoines,
A voir ces arbres nus, à voir passer ces moines,
On dirait qu'ils s'en vont, ensemble, et tous en rang,

Vers leur Dieu dont l'azur d'étoiles s'ensemence ;
Et les astres, brillant là-haut sur leur chemin,
Semblent les feux de grands cierges tenus en main,
Dont on n'aperçoit pas monter la tige immense.
