Les vergers de mai

En mai, les grands vergers de la Flandre féconde
Sont des morceaux de paradis qui se souviennent
D'avoir fleuri si blancs, aux premiers temps du monde.

Les yeux qui voient croient voir une aile aérienne
Parmi les lointains purs doucement remuée,
Les éventer du fond du ciel, sous les nuées.

Le vent, qui chante et rit, murmure une louange
A l'herbe ardente et drue et caresse les haies ;
Et les arbres sont beaux comme des manteaux d'anges.

Et les oiseaux nichant parmi les pommeraies
S'y poursuivent, et les branches ornementales,
Sur les vols lumineux, font tomber leurs pétales.

Tandis qu'au pied des troncs vont et viennent les bêtes,
Léchant l'écorce en or de leurs langues gourmandes,
Et que les bonnes fleurs s'inclinent vers leurs têtes
Dans l'herbe - beurre et lait - des pâtures flamandes.
