Sitôt que le soleil dans le matin luisait,
Comme un éclat vermeil sur un saphir immense,
Que dans l'air les oiseaux détaillaient leur romance,
Lu ferme tout entière au travail surgissait.

Un va-et-vient, mêlé d'appels hâtifs bruissait,
Et les bêtes de cour, en farfouille, en démence,
Courant, sautant, volant, mêlaient d'accoutumance,
Leurs cris et leur folie à ce bruit qui haussait.

Et dès l'aube, on partait ensemble au long des haies,
Sarcler des champs de lin, entourés de saulaies,
Couper, tasser, rentrer le foin par chariots.

Là-haut, chantaient pinsons, tarins et loriots,
Les plaines embaumaient au loin ; et gars et gouges
Tachaient les carrés verts de camisoles rouges.
