Les granges

Emile Verhaeren 1855 (Sint-Amands) – 1916 (Rouen)



S'élargissaient, là-bas, les granges recouvertes,
Aux murs, d'épais crépis et de blancs badigeons,
Au faîte, d'un manteau de pailles et de joncs,
mordaient par endroits les dents des mousses vertes.

De vieux ceps tortueux les ascendaient, alertes,
Luttant d'assauts avec les lierres sauvageons,
Et deux meules flanquaient, ainsi que deux donjons,
Les portes qui bâillaient sur les champs, large-ouvertes.

Et par elles, sortait le ronron des moulins,
Rompu par les fléaux frappant l'aire à coups pleins,
Comme un pas de soldats qu'un tambour accompagne ;

On eût dit que le coeur de la ferme battait,
Dans ce bruit régulier qui baissait et montait,
Et le soir, comme un chant, endormait la campagne.
