Le gel

Sous le fuligineux étain d'un ciel d'hiver,
Le froid gerce le sol des plaines assoupies,
La neige adhère aux flancs râpés d'un talus vert
Et par le vide entier grincent des vols de pies.

Avec leurs fins rameaux en serres de harpies,
De noirs taillis méchants s'acharnent à griffer,
Un tas de feuilles d'or pourrissent en charpies ;
On s'imagine entendre au loin casser du fer.

C'est l'infini du gel cruel, il incarcère
Notre âme en un étau géant qui se resserre,
Tandis qu'avec un dur et sec et faux accord

Une cloche de bourg voisin dit sa complainte,
Martèle obstinément l'âpre silence - et tinte
Que, dans le soir, là-bas, on met en terre un mort.
