Dansez sur la berge, les flammes,
Comme de petites madames,
Comme de tristes petites madames.

Voici les soirs de la Saint-Jean
Au long du fleuve et des étangs.
Dansez sur la berge, les flammes,
Avec des gamins roux autour de vous,
Copeaux follets, folles spirales,
Dansez, dansez, dansez,
Petites flammes pastorales.

L'oiseau vous frôle et jette un cri,
Les petites madames.

Le vent vous fouette et vous rougit,
Les petites madames.

Le curé passe et vous bénit,
Les petites madames.

Voici les soirs et l'horizon couleur de lie,
Dansez, dansez, les petites madames,
Dansez votre mélancolie.
Déjà la nuit et ses ombres se meuvent
Comme des veuves
Au long des fleuves ;
Dansez encor, dansez, les flammes,
Pour le bon Dieu
Un peu
Et rendez-lui votre âme,
Votre âme avec toutes ses flammes,
Les vacillantes petites madames.
