En automne, dans la douceur des mois pâlis,
Quand les heures d'après-midi tissent leurs mailles,
Au vestiaire, où les moines, en blancs surplis,
Rentrent se dévêtir pour aller aux semailles,

Les coules restent pendre à l'abandon. Leur plis
Solennellement droits descendent des murailles,
Comme des tuyaux d'orgue et des faisceaux de lys,
Et les derniers soleils les tachent de médailles.

Elles luisent ainsi sous la splendeur du jour,
Le drap pénétré d'or, d'encens et d'orgueil lourd,
Mais quand s'éteint au loin la diurne lumière,

Mystiquement, dans les obscurités des nuits,
Elles tombent, le long des patères de buis,
Comme un affaissement d'ardeur et de prière.
