Je les ai vus, je les ai vus,
Ils passaient, par les sentes,
Avec leurs yeux, comme des fentes,
Et leurs barbes, comme du chanvre.

Deux bras de paille,
Un dos de foin,
Blessés, troués, disjoints,
Ils s'en venaient des loins,
Comme d'une bataille.

Un chapeau mou sur leur oreille,
Un habit vert comme l'oseille ;
Ils étaient deux, ils étaient trois,
J'en ai vu dix, qui revenaient du bois.

L'un d'eux a pris mon âme
Et mon âme comme une cloche
Vibre en sa poche.

L'autre a pris ma peau
- Ne le dites à personne -
Ma peau de vieux tambour
Qui sonne.

Un paysan est survenu
Qui nous piqua dans le sol nu,
Eux tous et moi, vieilles défroques,
Dont les enfants se moquent.
