Doctor's Words

A doctor's words, so wise and clear,
"Stay healthy, my dear, have no fear!"
But oh, the human ways are sly,
In non-compliance, we're oh so spry.

"Exercise daily," the doc commands,
Yet the couch's embrace still firmly stands.
Jogging shoes gather dust in the drawer,
As Netflix marathons win, evermore.

"Five servings of veggies," they say with glee,
But oh, that pizza's cheesy victory!
Greens on the plate, a fleeting sight,
Beneath layers of sauce, our veggies take flight.

"Eight hours of sleep," the prescription's call,
Yet midnight scrolls through screens enthral.
Binge-watching shows till dawn's first light,
What’s-Apping with abandon,
Who needs sleep when plot twists ignite?

“Take a pill to lower the Hg A1C” roars the doctor,
Yet the oblivious is sated with a drop from 6.6 to 6.5.
The all-knowing has no sway,
As it is each’s choice as to their way.

"Stress reduction," the doctor implores,
While deadlines pile up and tempers soar.
We swear we'll meditate, find some zen,
But life's chaos reigns, over and again.

In the face of advice, we humans do jest,
Our stubborn ways put health to the test.
But laughter's the key, as we nod and sigh,
Negligence with a wink in our eye.

Mani S. Kavuru

Words and writing have always interested me, but the transition now is from scientific writing (which is based on logic and the rational) to a more emotive, lyrical form. At present this remains an experiment to see if I can strike the right tone, elicit a desired effect, etc. Full disclosure: I have been utilizing chatGPT as an "assistant"; I provide the prompts, edit extensively, yet the structure is provided by my assistant. I take full responsibility for the end result. Not that dissimilar to work on a scientific project in the lab, etc. more…
