A Father's Love Never Leaves

when skies turned from blue to grey
and light had faded from the day
i turned and thought of (You).

when talks came
and anger framed
i turned and thought of (You).

(You), who i was once a part of
(You), who sang of cardinals and dove
into the abyss of marriage
i turned and thought of (You).

when time passed and seasons crept
while daughter cried and mother wept
i turned and thought of (You).

when father turned foe
and mother turned toe
i turned and thought of (You).

(You), who bore an evil mark
(You), who brought to mind thoughts of parks
and summers deep in joyous thought
i turned and thought of (You).

when years of hate and rage subside
i tried to find where (You) reside
i turned and thought of (You).

when (I) grew tired and weary of anger
when (I) decided to throw out the hanger
(I) turned and thought of (You).

(You), who spoke in a gentle tone
(You), who decided to pick up the phone
and listen to a war-torn voice
(I) turned to talk to (You).
