Charles Dickens' Desperation Inspiration
Jerry Lovelady 1954 (Texas)
The children are hungry
the cupboard is bare
when, oh when will the lightning strike?
The inkwell is caked
with black ooze and despair
when will the saving light shine?
Naked white parchment
virgin leaf breathlessly awaits
what shall appear; it is not clear?
Rests the mighty instrument
of callous fate
is it too late, too late?
I can 't bear to scrawl
another curly que
may I have more time, more time?
Landlord has cut off
the coal for my rent
Is the money all spent, all spent?
Now the words flow
salvation at last,
The blockage is past, creation at last!
About this poem
Charles Dickens was known to write who volumes in a single sitting out of desperation brought on by his lack of funds. Remarkably, he was able to pull off some of the most cherished fictional stories ever written. A worthy example for those who have experienced writer's block.
