I am not the mother or the crone
I am another creature entirely
I am in between worlds
Spiritual realms and realness intertwined

Barriers of my own making
Tricked me into solitude
Damned by the expectations of others
The doctrines of polite society

I long for freedom to scream the truth
The temporal no longer concerns me
I am a water sprite and a dragon
Wanting to break from cages

I am cawing birds and misty fog
I absorb pain into my skin
I wish to wash away in dark waters
Whispering it to beasts below the surface

Monsters I was taught to fear
Are not the ghouls presumed
The real beasts wear clever disguises
Patriarchy and pathetic doctrines

The power of the in between
Is rising within my veins
I hear the call of my ancestors
I see wisps of their existence

Breathing life into my numbness
They want me to awaken
From the slumber that overtook me
Slowly and all at once

The illusion that kept me trapped
Has been revealed
I know the truth in my bones
I am another creature entirely

I am the Inbetween

About this poem

I am in between roles in life. I am no longer in an active "mother" role and not quite ready to be the wise crone. I am not sure what that makes me. This poem was an attempt to figure that out.
